Round Up

March Round-up

I created this blog almost a month ago, mainly as a means of distraction, as I’ve been going through a lot of crap (sorry) in my life. I still am, but this last month has proven to me that this, blogging, and this wonderful community is what I’ve been searching for a long time, and to be honest – it was kind of a life belt for me. Everything about it is so amazing, and I’m really glad to be a part of it, I just hope I’ll stick to my goals and make this a long-running thing. 🙂

On that subject, I’ve decided to do a post to sum-up this past month, to let you all know what I’ve been doing, reading, watching, what I’m about to read, etc.

Life

Nothing special in this area lol, as I’m still struggling to pull myself out of the aforementioned crap, but I can honestly say it’s getting better. Among other things, I’ve been trying to control my awful habit of quitting things like courses, drawing outside of work, learning languages, friends, that kind of stuff. So far so good!

First thing I did was getting back to my Portuguese lessons, and if you wonder why I’m learning that specific language – the hell do I know, it sounds nice. If you guys ever had the slightest interest in learning languages and you speak English well, or you’re a native speaker, then I recommend you try Duolingo. I’ve been there for 5 years now, and can honestly say I’ve learned quite a good bit, I even managed to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Portuguese. 🙂

I’ve been slacking, it was 68%

Duolingo is above all fun. It’s colorful, has cute images, and it functions more like a game. You have achievements, money currency (lingots) with which you can buy power-ups, and the lessons themselves are modified like a game. And what’s the best thing? It’s completely free! Yay, I love me some free stuff. So, if you ever wanted to learn German, Romanian, Irish, Greek, Japanese, Klingon, High Valyrian, or whatever you fancy – this is THE site to do it. There are currently 28 languages, three more coming soon, and there are variants, like learning English from Spanish, etc.

Books

March wasn’t that eventful in reading either. I’ve read:

Short story

Opal (The Raven Cycle #4.5)

Classic

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee   Review

Fantasy/Magical Realism

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman   Review

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman   Review

Children’s

A Series of Unfortunate Events #1 – #3 by Lemony Snicket

Anthology

The Radical Element by Jessica Spotswood   Review

I’m currently reading/finishing:  The Price Guide to the Occult by Leslye Walton (buddy reading with the awesome Cat @ CatFairy Books) and Princesses Behaving Badly: Real Stories from History Without the Fairy-Tale Endings by Linda Rodríguez McRobbie

In the last month I bought: My Lady Jane, His Dark Materials, The Girl who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her own making, The Bat, The Color of Magic, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Soul Music and Maskerade. The last 5 are Discworld books by Terry Pratchett which I’ve already read, I’m just collecting them now.

ARCs I acquired: The Emerald Circus , The Seven Deaths of Evelyn HardcastleTess of the Road, Greatest Magical Stories, and All the Ever Afters.

TV/Movies

I’m going to count the last two months here, because during March I’ve only watched one TV show – Charmed. One of my favorite shows ever, so I’ve been binging it like crazy. I’m on season 4 now, at the time where Prue is gone, Paige is already accepted to the trio, and Phoebe and Cole are blissfully happy. I’m already devastated at the thought of what’s going to happen soon.

Charmed_BHS2.jpg

In February I binged (is there any other way?) two amazing shows. Dark is super creepy, mysterious and amazing German show (yes it’s in German, use subtitles dammit!), which is marketed as European Stranger Things, which it’s NOT. I love Stranger Things, but Dark is sooo much more! It really messes up with your head, in a good way.

Mindhunter! Have you watched Mindhunter?! This one is of a lesser quality, acting is not superb (looking at you, Holden), but if you’ve ever had an unhealthy obsession with true crime – this is your deal. It’s based on the real-life experiences and the book Mindhunter by an FBI agent John E. Douglas who, through his interviews with and the research of murderers’ MMO’s, was eventually instrumental in development of the modern criminal profiling and creation of the term serial killer. It is set in late 70s, with appearances from well-known serial killers Edmund Kemper, Jerry Brudos, Richard Speck, etc., who are being interviewed by detectives Holden Ford and Bill Tench. Need I add that David Fincher (of Seven, Fight Club, Gone Girl, Zodiac, etc.) directed several episodes?

I’ve watched only a couple of movies: Blade Runner 2049 7/10, The Shape of Water 8/10, Coco 9/10, Ferdinand 8/10, The Cloverfield Paradox 7/10, and Justice League 7/10.

Music

I’ve been neglecting music for about year and a half, among other things, so I’m currently out of the loop. The last and only album I got this year is How Did We Get So Dark, by Royal Blood, and I love it. I usually listen to hardcore punk/metal/indie rock music, so if you are anywhere in that orbit, check it out:

I’ve also been neglecting my concert activity, and I haven’t been out in months. But two days ago I went to a trash/punk gig to see the amazing Russian band Siberian Meat Grinder (yes you’ve read that correctly) for the third time. I don’t usually like trash metal genre, but these guys are something else. Their song names like Slay the Dragon, Metal Bear Stomp, Siberian Keelhaul might give you a clue. Suffice to say I had a good time, and some good beer. 🙂

Other

I’ve played only one game this month, the awesome giggle-torture that is Chuchel, and I probably won’t play anything for a while as I don’t have any time to spare. I also bought some blogging accessories (let’s just call it that for the sake of this post) at a Chinese mall, where you can get a bunch of cute stuff for a low price, but you can also discover some disturbing shit, like a salt-shaker in the shape of a penis. I have no need for such objects, but here’s my loot:

IMG-47f3f155a931177febfa0086d1897cb9-V.jpg
At the register I pretended I was buying this for a kid

In April I’ll try to read more and probably review all the books I’ve bought, and I’ll do a couple more TV reviews, maybe some movies too, but books will of course prevail. In the last week of April I’m going on a well-deserved vacation, so there will probably be a post on that too, as I feel the need to update you guys on my adventures too. 😛

What do you have in store for April? Will you read more or less, and which books? Talk to me in comments, and happy Easter to everyone who celebrates on Sunday (or at all), mine is a week later. Enjoy the weekend everyone! ❤

  1. I hope your blog will be a long-running thing too, cause it’s so lovely 🙂 I look forward to hearing what you think of Princesses Behaving Badly, it sounds so intriguing, but I’ve head a lot of mixed things. Ahh, Charmed ❤️ I haven’t seen since it aired, but now you’ve put the idea in my head, I think it’s time for a re-watch. Phoepe and Cole will break my heart all over again… They were my first ship, before I even knew what shipping was, lol.

    1. Thanks Aurora! 🙂 ❤ Princesses are going slowly for me, but I think I'll wrap up this week, and you've heard right unfortunately :/ I knooow! I've just watched the episode where he becomes The Source and I cried again 😥 Haha really, the original ship, and the saddest one ❤

      1. That’s a shame, cause it’s such a cool concept for a book! I’m gonna start rewatching Charmed this weekend, I’m so excited 😍 Even though I know it will make me cry…

        1. It is a very cool concept but the writing is poor, we’ll see when I get to the end 🙂 Yay! For watching Charmed of course, not the crying bit, but there’s more happy than sad moments, at least up to season 3/4 🙂

  2. Ah I love Duolingo- I do want to try Portugese, cos I think it’s a beautiful language 😀 I absolutely love to kill a mockingbird 🙂 I do get what you mean about Mindhunter- but I did find it super fascinating!! Awesome wrap up!

    1. Me too, I don’t know why, it’s just pretty, not that I’ll have a chance to use it haha 🙂 Oh I loved Mindhunter, Holden was just a minor pet peeve 😀

Btw, from an inexperienced blogger to an experienced one – I noticed a bunch of spam likes throughout the comments on this post, so do you know how can I remove those or prevent it from happening in the future? I googled for about an hour and it seemes that WordPress either condones spam or just ignores it :S

      1. hehe fair enough! haha totally get that!

Gosh I honestly don’t know- it’s been happening to a lot of comments on all different blogs and I’ve seen someone else commenting not to click on them (and it’s filling up all my notifications :/ ) WP generally is pretty good about spam and have Akismet spam protection, but I don’t know what they’re doing about this- it’s pretty annoying :/

        1. Yes, I’ve seen it on other blogs too, it’s some Russian spammers thing :S WP protection is good for comments but not for likes. I don’t know, someone could click out of curiosity and who knows what will happen, but all of mine have www and sexy in the name, so I guess everyone will figure out it’s spam xD Hope they solve it soon grrr

  3. So funny you said that about Mindhunter, I started watching as soon as it came out, got halfway through the first episode and was so turned off by the horrible acting (especially Holden, exactly like you say) that I gave up and didn’t watch again for a few months. I’m glad I gave it another shot because it was really great sometimes and in general I think he got better, but still. I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one to think that!

And I’m always trying to get people to use duolingo when they complain about not being able to learn a language. It’s a great way to learn and even if the repetition gets boring, it means you learn it for sure. Great post, I hope your life crap clears up quickly 🙂

    1. Haha exactly! The other detective is good but Holden is acting like a prick sometimes 😀 He, and his relationship drama are the only boring part for me, other than that Mindhunter is awesome 🙂

Duolingo is really the best and the only 100% free language learning program so I love it 🙂 And it’s soo colorful haha 😀 Thank you! Blogging helps a lot, I should have started it earlier 🙂

      1. Ugh agreed, I forgot the girlfriend is such a terrible actor too…that constant monotone she talks in! I rolled my eyes every time she came on screen, those were the worst scenes of their completely boring relationship. I’m so glad to not be alone in this, haha 🙂

  4. I’m sorry you’re going through some crappy stuff, but glad to know you’re slowly making your way out of it. I hope things continue to get better!

You had a much better reading month than me! I was barely able to finish 3 books this month, so I’m planning for April to be a way better reading month for me. I’ve just been focusing on writing a lot here lately.

I’ve always wanted to watch Charmed, but never have gotten around to it. I’ll have to check it out!

    1. Thank you Frankie! Blogging sure helped! 🙂 ❤

No worries, read at your own pace 🙂 I am complaining because I used to read much much more per day, but now I can't seem to hold my attention on a book for more than 30 minutes :/ Haha I'm also focusing more on blogging and so I don't have time to read 😀 Ah the irony 🙂

Hope you like Charmed! I was a total witchy teen when I first watched so I have a beautiful memory of the show, but I'm rewatching now at 27 and they still kick some demon ass! First 2/3 seasons have a heavy 90's feeling and poooor visual effects, just to warn you 😀

  5. Great post! I love when bloggers do wrap-up type posts that include life stuff outside of books. I just started doing weekly wrap-ups and I’m already looking forward to this week’s post cause it’s like a little mini journal entry or something, haha.

I’m loving that Royal Blood song! I haven’t heard them before, but they sound super good. And another concert goer! I started going to shows a few years ago when I was dealing with some bad depression, and they’re so much fun that I made a habit out of it. I just went to a couple a few weeks ago, but I don’t have any more scheduled until May 😦

Duolingo is great! I was using it for a while when I was taking French classes to help me even more, and it’s so useful.

    And of course Mindhunter ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

    1. Thanks, I love to ramble too, and this is the perfect spot xD I’d do the weekly ones, but since my life is uneventful I’d have to start writing about work (noooooo) haha 🙂

Nice, glad you like it! I discovered them several years ago when they were literally unknown, but now Queens of the stone age are taking them on tour and they are suddenly famous haha 🙂 Yesss, I’ve been going to concerts and local gigs since I was a kid because my parents listen that kind of music, but since I moved to the city for my studies in 2010 I’ve also infiltrated the hardcore punk society haha 🙂 Those gigs are amazing, be it 20 or 500 people in the crowd, everyone is soo friendly and awesome, and there’s always cool merch to buy and foreign people to meet 🙂 Nothing until May that you like, or nothing at all? I though you had gigs all the time in US 😀 We have a tiny community but they organize events almost every weekend, and there’s always something new to hear 🙂

Yess, I love duo! I had a 360-day streak in 2015 and then I went abroad and had no internet for 3 days 😭😭😭 That was such a downer that I gave it up for a year or so 😑

      1. Yeah, I’m wondering how much I’ll have to talk about each week, especially since I basically don’t do anything but blog, haha.

Oh, nice! It’s so cool seeing smaller bands getting the recognition they deserve. Ah that’s awesome that you got into it from your parents! My dad occasionally goes to concerts, but not very often. My mom like, never goes to any. I love them, though. Aw, I love shows like that! Most of the bands I see have really awesome crowds like that, filled with super nice people. There are a couple bands that have shitty crowds, though. Sucks cause I really like the bands, lol. Eh, nothing I want to go to. Or, nothing I REALLY want to go to, at least. I’m pretty broke right now, so I have to pick and choose. Plus I normally prefer going to smaller (and cheaper) shows, so I’m sure there are tons of them going on, but none I can afford, haha. That sounds like such a neat community! There are always smaller shows going on in Atlanta, but I don’t know a lot of the bands, and Atlanta is insane and both me and my bf hate driving in that craziness, so we don’t go as often as we could.

Oh noooo! I’d get bummed out from that too, haha.

        1. Me too, I guess I’ll need to buy more blogging accessories so I can blog about them? xDDD

Yeah, it’s really cool, like even if the band is not that great, it’s worth going just to hang out with people 🙂 And we have one squat place where you don’t pay admission but a donation of your choice, minimum of 1$, which you put into a hollow TV xD Beer is also 1$, and they have cool graffiti all over because local artists hang out there, and there’s also free dinner, the kind you would find in a mess hall, it’s awesome 🙂 Yeah some good bands here have shitty crowds too, either too aggressive or too uptight, so I don’t like do attend those events ugh. It sucks you don’t have donation based events, that saved my life literally, I was soooo broke during college, but I could still go to gigs and I can safely say I had the time of my life in that period, I met so many awesome people and heard new music 🙂 Ah that’s too bad, I don’t like big cities either, you should come to Novi Sad and we can go to cheap gigs hahaha xD What kind of music do you listen to anyway, punk? 🙂 These gigs I’m talking about range from hardcore punk, punk rock, ska, crust, d-beat, post metal, post rock, etc… 🙂

        2. Haha, definitely!

Whaaat? That sounds awesome! I don’t know of any places like that around here. Most of the shows I go to are around $15-30 (sometimes $40-60 for bigger bands), and beer is always sooo expensive, like $6-7 for one can of Bud Light or some other basic beer. I very rarely drink at shows cause of that. Man, I wanna go to those shows with you! I’m never really sure what genres different bands fall into, lol. Most of the ones I listen to are listed as like, indie rock, punk rock, “post-punk” (idk, that’s just what Wikipedia says, haha), one of them says folk-punk, I’ve never even heard of that genre but okay, lol. Most bands I like fall into those type of categories, but I also like harder stuff… metalcore is a genre that keeps popping up (I literally don’t know what any of these genres mean, I’m just going by what it says for my fave bands on Wikipedia, lmao). So. That kind of stuff? Haha, I’m so bad at genres.

          Liked by 2 people

        3. Well, you live in USA, so that’s why 😀 But the donation system is common in Europe, even in developed countries, I guess it’s all about community. And I know for a fact that cheap beer in Europe also costs 6-7$ everywhere you go, but we’re a poor country with poor prices and a lot of alcoholics 😀

Haha I never think about genres too, but people always specifically ask, and I didn’t know how to properly explain the variety of good music I go and listen to, excluding various trashy genres other people would put in the same basket with the good ones 😀 I love indie rock, punk rock and post punk, so we’re good xD And what is folk punk haha 😀

          Liked by 1 person

        4. Ugh, true. So dumb. That’s so neat that other countries use the donation system, though. It just makes me want to travel even more!

Well I’m glad you asked about genres cause now I know, too! Haha. Seems like we generally like the same kind of music 😀 According to wiki, folk punk is a mix of folk music and punk rock… It seems like it’s mainly music that uses a lot of less common instruments like mandolins and accordions and stuff. The band I was looking up that’s in that category uses a melodica sometimes, soooo I guess that’s why they’re considered folk punk? idk lol

  6. Wonderful post!! I loved your music choices. I am a sworn metalhead but I definitely need to check Siberian Meat Grinder. I mean, this is one hell of a name for a band….I can’t wait to read your review on ”Princesses Behaving Badly” and I need to say a huge ”thank you” for the information on Duolingo.
Time to express the two-weeks time off (Easter time rocks!) to start learning some Swedish. And Serbian. And Norwegian.

    1. Thanks Amalia! 🙂 As I said, I don’t usually listen that kind of music, but we don’t get many famous bands here bah :S Do you maybe like Therion? I was obsessed with them in high school, still love them 🙂

I think I’ll finish Princesses during the next week, thanks! 🙂 Awesome, glad someone likes Duolingo haha, I’ve been using it alone for 5 years 😀 There’s no Serbian course yet (but there is Klingon haha), but I hope you’ll like the other two!! 🙂 ❤
