Round Up

April Round-up

This last month went by so quickly I haven’t even noticed it’s May, so I’m a bit late with my roundup, oops. ๐Ÿ™‚ A lot of stuff happened during April, so I didn’t get as much time to read as I originally planned to, but I hope to compensate in May. Here’s what I’ve been up to:

I’m kind of always slacking in this area haha, except this time I have a neat excuse! I’ve been working like a busy bee while preparing for my trip to Switzerland/France. Do you want to know what it was like? You’ll read all about it in my first travel post! ๐Ÿ™‚ In short: it was awesome! There is one downside with my traveling, and it’s the fact I have to give my dog to someone to take care of him. I haven’t been able to pick him up yet since I just got back home and had to work a lot, but I’ll visit him for the weekend. I’ll have to leave him with my parents for two more weeks because I have another trip planned and I’m super sad about it. It’s really quiet and boring without him and I miss him very much. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Here’s another photo of Taco, in case you miss him too:

Welp, I’ve read two whole books in April. Yep, you’ve heard that right. :/ I just couldn’t find the time/will to do it, so I hope I’ll get in the reading mood soon. I’ve also read some children’s books, but I don’t think that counts. I’ve read:

The Price Guide to the Occultย  Review

Princesses Behaving Badlyย  Review

Greatest Magical Storiesย  Review

Hazy Dell Press Monster Seriesย  Review

I’m currently reading (at about 50% done with each one): Robots vs. Fairies, and My Lady Jane. I’ve bought zero books this month, which is really sad, but I needed all the money for my trip(s). I do have a couple arriving soon (I hope) to my mailbox. I didn’t request any ARCs, which is actually a good thing considering I still have a couple waiting to be read.

I did compose a May TBR, though I’m not the one to keep up with schedules, but I’ll give it a try! Here’s what I really want to read in May:

My Plain Jane – after I finish My Lady Jane (which is awesome btw), I’ll request this one on Edelweiss and cross my fingers.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle – This is a Netgalley ARC I’ve had for a while now because the publication date is set as September 2018, so I kept delaying it, but then it came out in February! I’m really excited to read it as I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about it.

His Dark Materials Trilogy – I’ve been waiting over a month for this to arrive, and I got sick of it and wrote an angry note to Book Depository, so they sent another one…still waiting, thanks a lot.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making – This one is sitting on my shelf far too long, and it’s looking at me sadly, I have to read it.

Feet of Clay –ย It’s high time I continue my Discworld adventure and this is the next one. I couldn’t find a physical copy for the life of me, so I’ll take it out of the library’s children’s section (Yes, they keep Pratchett there. And G.R.R. Martin too O.O).

We Have Always Lived in the Castle – Okay, I’ve mentioned several times now I need to start reading Shirley Jackson, and the time is now!

Six books huh, ambitious much? And four are a part of a series, yikes. I’ll give it a try, what the heck.

I’m still re-watching Charmed, when I manage, I love that show to bits! I binged one new show, The Terror, which is based on Dan Simmons’s book by the same name, and it’s amazing! I’m already thinking about a re-watch since it’s sooo good, but I should probably read the book first too.

Both the book and the movie are based on true events, of ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, led by Captain Sir John Franklin, departing in 1845 from England on an expedition to find the Northwest passage through the Canadian Arctic archipelago. The ships and the crew were never seen again. Ever since, numerous search parties were sent and bit by bit Franklin’s expedition began to unravel with findings such as graves, relics from the ships, ship parts and cairn notes. Finally, Erebus was found in 2014, and Terror in 2016, but the true and whole account of what happened to those 129 men was never revealed, so this is a heavily fictionalized version, and one I truly enjoyed, especially the ending. If you like heavily atmospheric historical dramas shrouded in mystery (and ice), then you should check it out! My rating on IMDB: 9/10

I’ve also started on the second season of Westworld and I’m really confused since I forgot a lot of things from the first season, but I watched some useful YouTube videos explaining the various timelines and I hope I’ll get it soon haha, but I still love it. But I do miss Anthony Hopkins! Also, the music is so beautiful, I want to marry Ramin Djawadi.

I also want to start second seasons of both The Handmaid’s Tale and A Series of Unfortunate Events when I get the time.

I’ve watched only two movies this month, which is unusual for me, but both were good. Lady Bird was really fast paced, but awesome, with Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf killing it. My rating on IMDB: 8/10. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is brilliant. No more, no less. It’s exactly what I expected from the director who made In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, and it’s so much more. It’s a top of the line black comedy filled with non-stop action, cursing, violence, and it’s not giving a fuck about political correctness. The cast is superb, and it deserved all the Oscars if you ask me. Funny, horrible and sad are all thrown at you at the same time, please watch it. My rating on IMDB: 1000/10

I’ve discovered a new band this month that I really like, except it’s not really new and it doesn’t seem to exist anymore haha. It’s O.Children, and their music is heavily influenced by ye olde post punk/goth music which is my bread and water, so I reminded myself of some of my favorite bands, like Joy Division, and listened to them again after a long time.

I didn’t attend any concerts in April, but…. but!!! On May 18th I’m traveling to Budapest, Hungary to attend an orchestral performance by Ramin Djawadi….the Game of Thrones composer. The event is called ‘Game of Thrones: Live Concert Experience’, and it will have some cool visual effects too, and a GoT setup around the orchestra. I can barely breathe. I’ll bring a pack or ten of tissues cause I know I’ll cry. I will post about it of course.

In other news, I’m still slacking in the gaming department, mostly because my laptop is insisting on dying or it’s calling for help. I haven’t been able to clean it in ages because I unfortunately work on it 8h per day and then blog on it, so its schedule is tight. I’ll try to do it ASAP, or I’ll lose my job haha. I want to play the Franz Kafka game I recently bought, and I’ll replay Limbo, I think my laptop can manage that much now.

I bought some junk again at the China mall as ‘travel necessities’, though I certainly didn’t need two unicorn glasses and a flamingo notebook in Switzerland. I bought some junk while there too, but I’ll display it in the travel post. I ran into another penis-shaped thing this time too, and it’s a thing you drink out of. Guess where the straw goes hahaha.

I totally needed these.

“In April I’ll try to read more”, said March Marina, but as she failed miserably, the current one promises to give her best. I’ll try to do other things too, but this time I won’t promise anything, ha!

What do you guys plan for May? Travels, books, somethings? Let me know in the comments below, and please tell me how to work, socialize, clean and do chores, blog, and then read some books all in the same life, I seem to have forgotten how to do it. Oh and May the Fourth be with you young padawans! ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Three Billboards looks so good! Definitely gonna have to watch that one. You should put We Have Always Lived in the Castle at the top of your TBR list!!! It’s so good, and it’s a pretty quick read. Do iiiiiiit. Ha, I have a friend going to that GoT concert, too! Well, not that one exactly. She’s going to one in D.C. later this year. But still, same tour, I think.

    1. Yep! There is also a short movie done by him, called ‘Six Shooter’, if you can find it on You Tube I recommend it as well! ๐Ÿ™‚ Some directors really have a certain style and follow suit so I follow their projects like a lunatic haha, including del Toro, Wes Anderson, Nolan etc. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. The Girl Who Circumnavigated is one of my all-time favourites because it is such an allusory treasure trove and satirical gem ๐Ÿ™‚ But it also has a delightful whimsical plot too!

  3. Tehehehe. I love your fluffball of a dog! I’ve got an optimistic six books planned as well for May but if I’m honest that’s also going to be a reach.

A friend recommended Three Billboards to me and said I would like it but I feel like it’s the kind of movie where you have to be in a certain ‘mood.’ I could be wrong.

I think the Games of Thrones concert will be amazing! I’m going to have to see if that is touring my way anytime soon!!

    1. Sometimes I call him fluff of evil hahaha. Ahh well I could do 6 books a month easily before, I don’t know what’s the issue now, maybe I’m in a slump. :/ Hope you reach your goal!

Hmm well I don’t think you should be in any mood to watch it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Based on the first two movies by the same director (both among my top movies ever), I expected a dark and witty comedy with a bit of absurd, what I actually got blew my mind ๐Ÿ˜€ There are various moods throughout the movie where you go from laughing in tears to gaping open mouthed in shock haha. Hope you like it if you do watch it though, I’m a big fan of dark comedy in general so I’m a tad biased, but this one is really good ๐Ÿ™‚

Ohh me too, can’t wait! Yes, there are several UK dates, check it out online because I think those come earlier than the one I’m going to!
