Round Up

May Round-up

Another month flew by and of course I accomplished nothing! 😀 I keep making promises to read more, and since I’m running a book blog here, that would be a good idea, but life just gets in the way. My dog has been sick for three weeks now, on and off, and it has been a real struggle, both emotionally and financially. I am also having horrible nightmares about ticks, flies and larvae. My dog deserves a medal for what he’s been through, but I’ll fight for him till the end.

On to the happier subjects, my life hasn’t been that interesting and eventful in May, mainly because I’m constantly traveling to my parents’ home, where my dog is, and back, but I did have a weekend trip to Budapest, Hungary, which was awesome. I went to see the Game of Thrones live concert experience by Ramin Djawadi, and it was so good it blew my mind. We also made a trip to the Tropicarium while there, and that was super awesome too, but you’ll read more on that in my travel post tomorrow.

Books

Oh God. I’ve set a new low in May, with only three books, two of which I’ve started in April. I’ve read:

My Lady Jane  Review

Robots vs. Fairies  Review

The Miserable Mill (A Series of Unfortunate Events #4)  GR review

I’m currently reading The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, which is extremely good and may be the one that gets me going and out of my slump. If you remember my tbr for May, I set a goal of six books, and Evelyn is the first one I’ve started from that batch.

So, my May tbr now becomes my June tbr, and let’s hope the muse of reading will visit me some day soon.

Déjà vu

Even though I’m not reading as much as I should, I still bought two books this month. The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell, and Beren and Lúthien by Tolkien. I’ve also nastily requested and got approved for two more ARCs, Creatures of Want and Ruin by Molly Tanzer, and And the Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness. These four books may also interfere with my June tbr, but at least I’m reading something eh?

In other bookish news, next weekend is a big book event here, called Book Night, where our major publishing house sets awesome discounts for one night only, two times a year. So expect me buying at least four new books. FFS, I’m addicted. Send help.

TV/Movies

I am still watching Charmed, like I have the time to binge it properly. I’m also following the second season of Westworld, and I’m *mind*blown*. You’ll hear more about it in my next post, but Ramin Djawadi is a musical f***ing genius. If you’re following the show, you might have noticed he did a bunch of famous song covers in a saloon variant in the first season, but then again you maybe didn’t even notice, because it’s so subtle and brilliant. In this season we finally get a glimpse into the other parks – Shogun World and Raj World, and the songs are, of course, performed on traditional Japanese and Indian instruments, and are brilliant.

Another brilliant (sorry) moment happened when Paint It, Black by The Rolling Stones started playing in a traditional Japanese style, after we’ve already heard it in season 1 in a saloon, now indicating an interesting and important Déjà vu plot point between the two world’s characters. Also, I’m sorry for the spoilers, but this happened:

My little heart is breaking ❤

This month I’ve also watched some excellent movies! The first one being Black Panther, which was really awesome, but some things could have been better, like the music and the action scenes. My rating on IMDB: 8/10 I’ve finally watched The Guard, and as a huge dark comedy fan, and Brendan Gleeson fan, I wonder why I’ve waited this long. It’s great! My rating on IMDB: 8/10. The biggest surprise was definitely Game Night. I expected a regular trashy comedy, but I ended up with jaw pain from all the laughing. Although there are, of course, some generic lines and scenes, most of the movie is awesome, surprising and ridiculously funny, plus it’s about board games, I love board games! This is one of the very rare comedy movies which got a 9/10 IMDB rating from me. Jesse Plemons was the gem of this movie, and I keep loving him more and more since Fargo.

Music

So, the new Arctic Monkeys album came out. Not impressed. 😦 I really love that band, but this album is just bland. Oh god, it rhymes. Other than that, I’ve been furiously listening to the Game of Thrones soundtrack in preparations for the concert, and then I’ve been listening to it some more after the concert because Ramin Djawadi is a genius (did I mention that?), and now I’m totally hooked on his Westworld soundtrack.

Other

In other news, I played two games this month. First, The Franz Kafka Videogame, which is surreal as f**k, but also very interesting. Don’t expect a linear game, it’s very weird, but I loved the art and the puzzles were quite challenging. It is not a retelling of his novels, rather a game spawned from Kafka’s twisted mind, if he was still alive and decided to create a game that is. Next, I finally played Monument Valley. I’ve rarely been so immersed in a game, let alone a phone game. It’s brilliant, mind-bending and the music and graphics are gorgeous. You can expect a full review soon, on both parts and all expansions, since I played all of that at least three times.

As for looting, I didn’t get anything special this month, except this plush stingray. I know. It’s fabulous. It has quality sequins all over it, and under it. It’s my new sleep buddy. It’s fabulous, I know. I bought it at the Tropicarium in Budapest, along with that cute shell.

And that’s that for this month, my lovely friends. In June I’ll try to be more productive, if life favors me for a bit and stops throwing s**t at my face on a daily basis. 🙂 What were you up to in May? What do you have planned for June? Tell me all about it, I’m eager to know. ❤

    1. Me too, it’s working so far! 🙂 I know! I didn’t attach the saloon variant so google it if you want, it’s amazing! Yes, Black Panther is awesome and unique, though I must admit the coincidence of catching Coming to America with Eddie Murphy on TV, just before watching Black Panther, and there are some striking similarities haha. 😀 Andy Serkis is a perfect villain, and I loved all the actors in it, and the costumes…amazing! Hope you like it too! 🙂

    1. I know, I’m feeling the same thing! I was in such a slump, and the first chapter intrigued me, but then at day 2 chapter, bam! I’m so hooked, and this is the first time in ages I don’t constantly check the page I’m on out of boredom, but I did check today, and I’m only at 40% and so much has happened already! I can’t stop reading it, but I’m only choosing moments of complete silence to read, to give it my full attention, it’s so complex I had to write some things down haha. 😀 Love it. ❤
