Round Up

July Round-up

Oh well, no wonder I’m doing a July round-up so late because I haven’t been blogging that much either. Plus, there’s not much to round up, at least in book section. 😀 I was a slow reader in July with only 2.5 books and 2 short stories read, sniff. I’d say I’ll read more in August, but my promises have been turned to ashes so far, and August’s almost over sooo.

What I’ve Read in July + August TBR

Oh boy, here we go. The two books I’ve read are both ARCs, My Plain Jane, and Kingdom of Ash and Soot. Both reviews are coming soon, but I liked the first one significantly more. I’ve also read two short stories by Shirley Jackson, because I loved We Have Always Lived in the Castle so much I wanted to explore her other work. The stories are The Summer People and The Lottery. I loved both, they have an ominous feeling of dread hanging over them until the last page, but the novel was better, so both got a 4/5 from me. I’ll probably read The Haunting of Hill House next.

I’ve only bought one book in July (sigh), and it’s Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. I’m currently finishing Uprooted by the same author and I’m loving it!

What will I read in August, hmm? Well I’m finishing both Uprooted and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark at the moment, then I have some buddy reads scheduled for The Silent Companions and Heart-Shaped Box, and I want to try and tackle an ARCs that is coming out in September, And the Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness. Will I make it? I don’t know and I don’t care, I’ll just do my best. 🙂

TV/Movies

Since I neglected my reading duties, I had a lot of time to plow through some old and new TV shows. I finally finished Charmed, and as this was my first time ever watching the last few episodes (I was constantly delaying it), I was heartbroken. It wasn’t as sleazy as I though it would be, and it certainly made me chop some onions. Speaking of Charmed, what do you guys think of the reboot? I really don’t think it’s necessary, as they could have just created a fresh witchy TV show instead of recycling something that has a cult following and status. Rebooting movies is enough, why do we have to do it to our beloved shows too?

Next I binged the new Orange is the new Black season, and I loved it! I love that show so much, but the waiting is killing me as I usually binge the whole season in one day. After Charmed I decided to re-watch My name is Earl, which used to be one of my favorites when I was a teen, and it still rocks, I needed some laughs. But my current obsession is called Castle Rock. I’m seriously hooked, and even though I haven’t read more than 3 King books, I recognize some stuff from other movies, and I’m watching each episode twice to pick everything up.

Some shows I’m looking forward to in the upcoming months are: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (I realize this completely contradicts my Charmed rant, but this one has a chance to turn out better), the new seasons of Outlander (Let the sobbing commence), Better Call Saul (Already started but I’ll have to wait) and Mindhunter (Plot and release date kept strictly under wraps), and A Discovery of Witches, which may or may not change my views of the (Bleh) book.

In the movie section things were pretty okay: Life of the Party was funny, but I adore Melissa McCarthy so I’m biased, my rating on IMDB: 8/10. My Friend Dahmer is something I needed to watch as a true crime aficionado, and now I’m eager to read the graphic novel it was based upon. Ross Lynch did a terrific job of portraying young Dahmer exhibiting the first sociopathic signs that will lead him on a killing spree. My rating on IMDB: 7/10. I really liked the new Tomb Raider, and I don’t get people snapping at it and at Alicia Vikander. Yes, she has smaller boobies, get over it. I loved the plot, and the origin story, and I hope they’ll do more movies. My rating on IMDB: 8/10. The last movie I watched was a twist on the slasher genre which was better than I expected it to be. Tragedy Girls is cool, a bit campy, but all in all a fun watch. My rating on IMDB: 7/10. Oh, and I re-watched Wonder, sob sob. My rating on IMDB: 8/10.

Music

My hiatus actually started when I went to a four-day music festival, which required some serious recovery, and after which I kind of went slack in every area possible. The festival was great though, it’s EXIT festival, the largest and most popular of its kind in Serbia, and a lot of foreigners come each year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve heard of it. It’s located on the Petrovaradin fortress in Novi Sad, and there are many stages with different kinds of music, like techno, drum & bass, metal, rock, reggae, latino, etc. If you ask me, it’s getting worse each year, because they used to bring big names in different genres of music, but lately it’s mostly focused on techno, which kids like and I hate. I did manage to dig up some bands/djs I love though. Fever Ray was cool, Dog Eat Dog too, but I had the most fun on electronic acts (ah the irony). Delta Heavy threw a massive d&b party, and Zhu is my new obsession. I danced my feet off and drank a decent amount of beer. It was fun.

Warning: a lot of nekkid people in the video.

Other

Other than that, I didn’t do much except work work work. I did play Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, and I don’t really have much to say about it, because it’s awful. Should I do a rant review to warn all of you unsuspecting HP fans? Maybe I will. Now I’ll get to catching up on all posts I’ve missed, because there’s so much, and I want to read it all. 🙂 What have you guys been up to in July? If you even remember, haha. 🙂 Happy reading everyone! ❤

    1. Ahhh I’m surprised you didn’t start Castle Rock already! 😀 It’s amazing! Dahmer movie is great, it’s based on a graphic novel by a guy who went school with Dahmer, I need to read that too, but the main actor was brutally good! Even more so when I checked his other roles and it’s all cowlick-hairstyle Disney pretty boy. xD

        1. Ah, right, you’re from UK, so no Hulu? I watch it on HBO go which comes with my cable network, dunno if you have that option?

*whispering* if you can’t find it any other way, use the seamanship ways *wink*. Living in this trashy country, I can’t watch some shows legally so I have to go with that or wait 2+ years. -.-

  1. YAY for having read more Shirley Jackson! I’ve read The Lottery as well and loved it. I’m pretty sure she can do no wrong, lol. I need to read more of her short stories!

And YAY AGAIN for buddy reads!!! I’m super excited for ours 😀

Bahahaha, I also hated the HP: Hogwarts Mystery game. I got bored of it after a few hours. Ah well.

    1. I still liked the novella more, I can’t wait to read The Haunting of Hill House! But I’ll continue with the stories too. 🙂

Yay! It will be soon, promise! 🙂

Ah, lucky you. I got sucked in for several weeks. I wrote a hateful review of it for tomorrow. I need to warn people!

  2. I’m glad you are enjoying Uprooted! It’s pretty high on my TBR, so I’m excited to read it myself. And lol, you seem like a hardcore Potterhead (as am I 😉 ) so I’ll take your word for it that the game sucks; I’ve heard similar opinions, so I’ll trust you as much as I wish it wasn’t true haha. Great wrap-up! 😀

    1. I am, really, I read the first 10 chapters in one sitting (unusual for me), but near the end I got distracted by another book (usual for me), so I hope I’ll finish it today and review soon! Oh I am a Potterhead, the kind who was tempted to sleep with the illustrated editions when I first bought them, because they’re so gorgeous haha. 😀 (I didn’t, it’s weird) Happy to find another fan, and trust me on avoiding the game, but I’ll do a review soon so you can judge it yourself. 🙂 Thank you! ❤

  3. I always say to myself whenever I’m late posting a post… better late than never!!! And the Ocean was Our Sky sounds amazing, and I adore Patrick Ness’s writing. You’re so luck to get an ARC of it!

    1. Haha, well you’re really optimistic! 😀 I’m trying to do that now too, just post whenever and go with it. 🙂 It’s gorgeously illustrated! I think you can still request an ARC on Edelweiss+, it’s expiring in 13 days, so you’d have to read it in that time, because there’s only a PC version because of the images, it can’t go on kindle. :/

  4. I also love the new season of Orange is the new black, it was so gooood😂 I kind of didn’t like the first episode but the other were AMAZING!!! Well I’m still not so happy with the last episode because it just wasn’t fair for taystee but I loved the new characters. And I also don’t like techno😂 but that sounds like a fun festival and I thought I was the only one who didn’t like the HP game, I really wanted to like it but maybe it wasn’t for me?😭😂

    1. Yay! It’s one of the best shows out there, really! Yeah, the first one was weird with Susanne’s tripping and with all kinds of betrayal, it hurt. Ugh I know, I felt so sad for Taystee and then Blanca being taken away after false freedom, it broke my heart. 😦

Haha techno is stupid. 😁 Nope, you’re not the only one, it’s a cash cow, and that energy clicking was awful, I thought it would be more explorative. :/ There’s literally nothing interesting in it, except maybe duelling, which it limited. 😤

  5. Good wrap up! Don’t worry if you haven’t read a lot of books, sometimes its quality over quantity 😉

I feel like I need to read Shirley Jackson as I’ve heard of a few of her books and I think I’ll enjoy them!

I’m looking forward to our buddy read!

    1. I know, and in my case it really is, out of the last 10 books I’ve read almost each one was/is a 5-star read. 🙂 I just feel I’m behind other bloggers who read non-stop xD

I feel you should too. 😀 Start with a novella, either We have always lived in the castle, or the other one, stories are somewhat weaker.

Me too yay, I’m letting you know soon 🙂

      1. I think I have a message or two from you in Goodreads! I have been so behind on my blogging and emails so I’m pulling my finger out of my arse (for lack of a better and more polite expression) and will be on that as soon as possible!!

    1. Aww I was at that concert! Imagine if we were in the same place haha. 😊 That was after Tarja though, so I had to shut my ears to goat singing and just enjoy the music, eh. 😒 I’m devastated I’ve never seen them with Tarja. 😢

      1. Lucky, lucky girl! I agree 100% !I could never ever accept Olzon. The day they announced she was no longer member of the band, it felt like Christmas! I’ve seen them with Tarja (twice) and it was beautiful but Nightwish and Floor are a match made in Heaven…I saw them in Italy a couple of years ago and it was just phenomenal…

        1. Ooooh I’m so jealous now! 😨 Lucky you! You saw them in their best lineups 😦 I never saw any of my favorite teen era bands live, except Therion, Moonspell and My dying bride, because they were all broken up/changed singers/etc. :/

        2. I know, Marina 😦 I wanted to see Leaves’ Eyes soooo much but following the drama with Liv and the atrocious behaviour of the other members of the band, I’ve stopped supporting them. I saw Sirenia last year and they were pretty good. I’ve been a fan for a long time and despite the numerous changes, they create some amazing music.
