Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Villains

It’s Tuesday dear readers, which means it’s time for another TTT! This week’s topic is all about my favorite kind of characters – villains! I think we all love our villains at least a little bit, firstly because they’re not always perfect like the goody two-shoes heroes, and secondly because they are more fun! Some characters on my list are actually antiheroes, because lately not everything is that black and white as it used to be, and others are pure evil but I can’t help but like them!

1. Severus Snape (Harry Potter)

Snape was a villain until the last book, so of course I’m counting him. In my opinion, he didn’t redeem himself by loving Lily, he did so by being loyal to Dumbledore to the very end, whatever it cost. I’m especially fond of him because of Alan Rickman’s brilliant performance.

2. The gentleman with the thistledown hair (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell)

I love Fae, and any normal Fae is evil, soo, the gentleman made quite a ruckus but I still like him because how could you not like a magnificent, magical, mysterious Fae?!

3. Cersei Lannister (A Song of Ice and Fire)

Look, Cersei just loves her damn kids, ok? She is a manipulative b***h with a grudge, but imagine living with *that* kind of prophecy over your head your whole life, and then watching it unfold word by word and still staying strong and tall AF. I’m not 100% proud of her in the last season, but I can’t wait to see how far she’ll go.

4. Lord Havelock Vetinari (Discworld series)

Another extravagant manipulator, Vetinari is not a villain per se but he’s the coldest creature that ever walked the Discworld. He’s a tyrant, but you do have to have a certain kind of mindset to keep together a city like Ankh-Morpork from falling apart. I’m freaked out by him, but I like and respect him.

5. Annie Wilkes (Misery)

While I don’t approve of Annie’s actions, I can certainly relate to her fangirling thing over Misery. If I lived in Santa Fe, I think you can guess who I’d stalk and molest, if not exactly kidnap and torture. She’s crazy, I love crazy, there you go. Dirty birdy!

6. Hannibal Lecter (The Silence of the Lambs)

I have to confess I haven’t yet read the books… But I promise they are on my most urgent TBR! Anyway, if Lecter is as half as convincing, creepy and psychotic in the books, with a dash of gentlemanly charm as Hopkins is – I can’t wait to get that series started. In the movies – you cannot hate this man. Cannot. I love him.

7. Gollum (The Lord of the Rings)

I mean, yes, this guy (creature?) is a total psycho and a disgusting traitor, but how can you not love him? Hooow? Look at him. :3

8. Dolores Umbridge (Harry Potter)

I won’t list Voldemort simply because I don’t love him, he’s pure evil. The only thing I love about him is Ralph Phiennes’s performance in the movies. Now, I don’t love Umbridge either, I hate the woman! But this froggy hag is just the kind of disgusting thing you love to hate, don’t you?

9. Littlefinger (A Song of Ice and Fire)

Well, I don’t love Littlefinger either, he’s sleazy and manipulative and horrible, but you have to give the guy some credit. He’s a great character and one of the greatest background schemers that ever was.

10. Holland (Shades of Magic)

In the end of this series, I did feel for Holland, because he isn’t really evil. He’s just some poor guy that made all the wrong choices and got himself in a right mess. I guess I felt so sad for him that I ended up liking him a lot.

So that’s it! Do you guys love any of these villains or some other ones and why? Do you prefer good guys or the bad guys? Let me know in the comments and have a great reading week! ❀

  1. Great list! I’d say honorable mention goes to the Night King. Dunno what fate awaits him in the books, but I loved the lore surrounding him and the White Walkers in the TV series. So glad he got what he deserved!

    1. Thank you! πŸ™‚ Yup, he’s a bit of a mystery to me, I really hope we’ll get his backstory and more White Walker lore in the books, it’s one of the things I look forward to the most in the novels, to be honest! πŸ™‚ I’m also hoping Arya will do him in in the books too πŸ™‚

  2. I know of most of these even if I don’t know them very well. I’m going to be controversial and say I don’t love Snape – eep. I actually agree with you and think that he is a good villain and his loyalty to Dumbledore is one of his redeeming features but I am not on board with the Lilly thing and well… a lot of people tend to romanticise him. Please don’t come for me *weeps silently*

Gentleman with the Thistle Down Hair – yes! Absolutely! He is very typically fae in the book and I like that – he has no concept of human morality which is dangerous but he genuinely believes he’s doing good thing. Which is er… an interesting take.

I love Cersei, she’s a great character and I love Lena Headey’s portrayal of her.

    1. Hahaha hope no one came for you yet but I agree with you. πŸ˜€ Bluntly said, Snape was a stalker. xD Yup, gentleman is a true Fae, the type of which I’ve only ever seen in Pratchett’s Lords and Ladies, but I loved him as a character, and in the TV series, what’s wrong with me. xD Cersei rocks! P.S. I’m back, and replying to century old comments, obviously. xD

  3. Wonderful list! Female villains are my faves and Cersei is one of the best ones. I know I shouldn’t, but I kind of love her. She made some bad life choices last season, but I’m still excited to see how far she’ll go too. And Snape… I have so many mixed feelings, but I totally agree with your take.

    1. Thanks! πŸ™‚ Mine too, although I don’t know many female ones from literature. πŸ™‚ I know, I love her too, how can you not really? πŸ˜€ I adore Snape but he’s a mixed bag, being such a jerk the first 6 books. πŸ™‚

  4. sdlkfs I have always loved Hannibal Lecter, HE IS JUST SO POLITE AND SMART AND ADVENTUROUS????? My friends are always shocked how much I like him, but Anthony Hopkins just does such a good job w his character sdlkjfslkjfslk

  5. Love this list!
Littlefinger was one of my favourite characters in that series ❀
Oh, and Annie… jeez. That lady is creepy as hell πŸ˜€ The actress did an awesome job in the movie. Even when she doesn't play a psycho villain i'm terrified of her πŸ˜€

  6. Ah I love how you described Snape’s redemption as being his loyalty to Dumbledore in the end- I really agree! Yeah I love watching how far Cersei will go. And I absolutely love Vetinari! I’m totally terrified by Gollum though! And I frickin hate Umbridge!

    1. Glad we agree about Snape! πŸ™‚ Me too, can’t wait for the final season! Haha I’m afraid of book Gollum, but I think the movie one is cute. πŸ˜€ Me too, but I love everything that got to her in the end! πŸ™‚
